The Telegraph: One in five Commonwealth Games athletes admitted to doping

„Twenty-one per cent of more than 900 athletes answered “yes” to the question: “I have intentionally used a prohibited substance or method without a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) in the last 12 months.”

English athletes won a record 176 medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, at which there were a total of 6,600 participants across a range of different sports.

Suspicions around specifically British athletes have also been raised after a second survey, in which 100 of 800 sportspeople said they had taken performance-enhancing drugs. Of the British athletes who took part, 42 per cent were considered international level while another 19 per cent were national level.

The British survey, carried out by UK Anti-Doping (Ukad), involved a group of 800 British athletes being asked similar questions to those posed at the Commonwealth Games that same year. The results of the study were first reported by the specialist doping website Honest Sport. In a similar survey in Spain, 36 per cent of athletes at the national athletics championships in 2022 admitted to drug-taking.“

„The World Anti-Doping Agency and the Spanish anti-doping agency informed us that a revised paper has been submitted for peer review, which has yet to be accepted, which estimates the prevalence of doping at the Commonwealth Games and the Spanish Athletics Championships at 16% and 28% (link). „
